Introduction
Calming supplements include minerals and amino acids used for sleep, tension, stress, or focus without stimulants. When someone takes Lexapro, Paxil, sertraline, another SSRI or SNRI, or lamotrigine, the useful question is not simply whether an interaction appears in a database. The decision depends on whether human combination studies exist, whether overlapping side effects are plausible, and whether the prescription is being used for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, or epilepsy.
As of August 2026, current U.S. prescribing information does not identify magnesium, GABA, L-theanine, glycine, or taurine as established interactions with escitalopram, paroxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, duloxetine, or lamotrigine. What the medication labels establish
Lexapro is escitalopram, Paxil is paroxetine, and sertraline is the generic ingredient in Zoloft. These SSRIs—and SNRIs such as venlafaxine and duloxetine—carry warnings about combining them with other serotonergic substances. Serotonin syndrome is therefore not an established outcome of combining these five ingredients with an SSRI or SNRI. Evidence is strongest—but still limited—for L-theanine with sertraline because that pairing has been tested directly. Absence from a prescription label should not be treated as a blanket clearance for an unstudied dose, blend, or patient.
The more immediate practical concern is overlapping tolerability. Escitalopram, paroxetine, sertraline, SNRIs, and lamotrigine can cause dizziness, fatigue, somnolence, nausea, or impaired coordination in some people. Lamotrigine is a separate decision pathway
Lamotrigine is not an SSRI or SNRI. Its major established pharmacokinetic interactions involve drugs that change glucuronidation, including valproate, certain antiseizure drugs, rifampin, and estrogen-containing contraceptives. The recommendation threshold should still be higher when lamotrigine is used for epilepsy, because a poorly studied combination is harder to justify when seizure control is at stake. Magnesium forms do not create different psychiatric interaction rules
Magnesium glycinate, citrate, malate, oxide, and L-threonate all supply magnesium, but differ in compound weight, solubility, elemental magnesium content, gastrointestinal tolerance, and the amount required per serving. Does magnesium need to be separated from psychiatric medication?
There is no evidence-based universal rule requiring magnesium to be taken two hours away from Lexapro, Paxil, sertraline, venlafaxine, duloxetine, or lamotrigine. Magnesium separation is established for other medication categories. Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics generally need wider spacing, while oral bisphosphonates should be separated from magnesium by at least two hours. A two-hour gap may still be used as a conservative troubleshooting strategy when a clinician agrees, especially when introducing one new ingredient. Symptoms that should not be treated as routine adjustment
Seek prompt medical guidance for fainting, severe dizziness, marked confusion, new coordination problems, or persistent vomiting or diarrhea. A new rash while taking lamotrigine requires urgent clinical assessment rather than self-directed experimentation with timing or dose.
Agitation, confusion, fever, heavy sweating, diarrhea, tremor, muscle rigidity, or abnormal reflexes can be signs of serotonin syndrome in someone taking an SSRI or SNRI.
