“Magnesium citrate” does not have one universal elemental percentage. Its ratio changes with the citrate structure and hydration state. The same caution applies to chloride and other forms sold as hydrates.

Example 1: 500 mg magnesium glycinate

Assume the ingredient is pure, anhydrous magnesium bisglycinate with a molecular weight of 172.42:

How to compare two magnesium labels honestly

  1. Match the serving sizes. Compare one serving with one serving, not one capsule with a two-capsule or two-scoop serving.
  2. Find the “Magnesium” row inside Supplement Facts. Record the amount per serving beside it.
  3. Treat that figure as elemental magnesium. The form named in parentheses identifies the source rather than adding another dose.
  4. Use compound weights only as supporting detail. A larger glycinate, citrate, or threonate number does not automatically mean more magnesium.
  5. Do not assign a blend’s total to every form. A 250 mg three-form blend contains 250 mg elemental magnesium overall, not 250 mg from each source.
